FJ Cruiser Engine Oil Selection

There are various brands of engine oils, but after watching a couple of oil testing videos, I have decided to stick with the Penrite brand. As for which specific Penrite oil to use, Penrite's product selector page suggests the following engine oil.

HPR 5 5W-40 (Full Synthetic)

The engine oil capacity for a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser during an oil and filter change is approximately 6.4 quarts (6.1 liters).

It's advisable to start by adding about 6 quarts (5.7 liters), then check the oil level using the dipstick. If necessary, add more oil in small increments until the dipstick indicates the correct level. This approach helps prevent overfilling, as some residual oil may remain in the engine after draining.

According to the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser Owner's Manual, the recommended engine oil is SAE 0W-20. This oil is preferred for its fuel efficiency and optimal cold-start performance. If SAE 0W-20 is unavailable, SAE 5W-20 can be used temporarily, but it's advised to replace it with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil change.

The main differences between 0W-20 and 5W-40 engine oils are in their viscosity (thickness) and performance characteristics under different temperatures.

1. Viscosity & Temperature Performance

  • 0W-20

    • "0W" means it flows easily at very cold temperatures (winter rating).
    • "20" means it remains relatively thin at operating temperatures, reducing internal friction and improving fuel economy.
    • Typically used in modern engines designed for low-viscosity oils.
  • 5W-40

    • "5W" means it is slightly thicker than 0W at cold temperatures but still flows well in winter.
    • "40" means it is much thicker at high temperatures compared to 0W-20, offering better protection in high-heat or heavy-load conditions.
    • Commonly used in high-performance or diesel engines.

2. Fuel Economy vs. Protection

  • 0W-20 is designed for better fuel efficiency and lower emissions because it creates less resistance in the engine.
  • 5W-40 provides superior protection in extreme heat, high-speed, and heavy-load conditions, making it ideal for performance or older engines.

3. Manufacturer Recommendation

  • Most modern Toyota engines, including the FJ Cruiser (2014), recommend 0W-20 for optimal efficiency.
  • 5W-40 might be suitable for extreme driving conditions, such as towing or high-performance use, but it is not typically recommended unless specified in the owner's manual.

Since hot weather and extreme temperatures are much more common in Victoria, Australia, rather than extreme cold, my preference is 5W-40 for better engine protection under high-heat conditions.
