UHF CB Installation

Let's start with the last photo, after everything finished this is the only visible part of Uniden UH8080S CB & Scanner.
I will write about the installation process, step by step with photos soon.

I have chosen Uniden UH8080S for couple of reasons:

  • Possibly the one of the best quality radio with full of features
  • Small sized unit, easy to hide somewhere
  • Display on remote mic
  • Able to listen police and  fire frequencies
  • 5 year warranty

What surprised me was RJ45 plug and 2 metre cable extension for the remote mic. As an IT engineer, I really liked Uniden's cable and connector standard. It makes much easier to find an extension cable at the length of your choice. I have mounted the main unit under the passenger seat but I guess it was possible to mount it somewhere at the back and connect remote mic with a 5 metre Cat6 cable. As you might know, there are a lot of empty and safe spaces at the boot of the FJ.

Mounting the Main Unit

I couldn't decide where to mount it. I wasn't sure which location would be the best. However, my antenna and antenna mount choice helped me for making the decision. I bought, the very popular Bandi mount. My antenna is Axis CH5T; black fibreglass dipole with stainless steel flexible spring.

Bandi Antenna Mount

Actually, I bought a bundle; radio and antenna together. Anyway, antenna cable was quite long, long enough to reach front areas, near instrumental panel. So I started searching for a easy mount space under the dash. One of my challenges was 'no drill hole' mount. There is plenty of space under the instrumental panel, near the steering shaft, however, bolts and holes were not suitable. I also checked left side of the glove box, again there is a space but easy mounting was not possible. Then I checked under the passenger seat and found a perfect location! (I am sure some people say what if flooded? Well if there is a risk of flooding, it's very easy to remove the unit) There are also some pre-drilled holes, some of them are holding seat belt circuit cables and airbag circuit cables.
